I am using the smashcaption redefinition for small images and tables with their caption situated in the margin. It smashes the caption but not additional footnotes. Furthermore, since the caption is smashed the footnotes are overlayed onto the caption. Is it possible to add the footnotes smashed and aligned after the caption?

In LaTeX, most problems arise from orientation. Could these problems be avoided? Certainly. But when is the right time to circumvent them? At an early stage of the process.

The same applies in the structure of your preamble. Had you realized for example, that your definition of smashcaption did not entail a vertical infinite shrinkable material, while in horizontal mode, then at least, the situation in having footnotes, superseded by descriptions, would have been remedied.

But the misconstruction is so subtle and almost goes undetected, that by the end of the document, I wonder whether it was better for you, to implement other classes, that would make better use, of side notes, captions, descriptions, and other relevant matter, than stick with the layout presented.
