\tikzstyle{every node}=[draw,shape=circle];
\node (v3) at (4, 0) {$v_3$};
\node (v5) at (2, -2) {$v_5$};
\draw [->] (v3)--(v5);

The above code gives me:

enter image description here Where there is no arrow head.

But if you change the coordinate of (v5), like (3,-1.5), then I will have:

enter image description here Where a very tiny arrow head appears at node (v5).

Am I missing something? Thanks

EDIT: as suggested by @Cmhughes,

I installed texlive from ubuntu 13.04 official repo. And

your first snippet, when posted into a complete MWE, works fine for me, and gives me an arrow- perhaps an update is in order.How do I update my TeX distribution? Please add \listfiles immediately before your \begin{document} and post it to your question :) Welcome to TeX.sx! –  cmhughes Apr 29 '13 at 20:55
@cmhughes I was lazy, so I just install from ubuntu official repo using apt-get texlive-full. So it might be due to some outdated packages in the repo? I will try downloading the Texlive from tug.org. –  gongzhitaao Apr 29 '13 at 21:07
Yes indeedyo- see How to install "vanilla" TeXLive on Debian or Ubuntu?. Alternatively, you could do some tweaking as described in How do I install the latest TeX Live 2012?. I follow the details in the first link, and it has worked for me every time. Once you have an update, let us know- when you've confirmed everything is good, we'll probably close this question :) –  cmhughes Apr 29 '13 at 21:11
I think Ubuntu 12.04 repos have only TeXLive 2009. So, you might want to update. –  kan Apr 29 '13 at 21:11
@kan Oops, it's on ubuntu 13.04. I've updated that. I assume that ubuntu has updated their repo for 13.04. –  gongzhitaao Apr 29 '13 at 21:14
