I am writing my first major LaTeX document, and this is my first time using BibTeX to add in a bibliography. I've searched quite a bit for an error like this, but I have not been able to find anything helpful. I am using TexShop on OSX, and I did the procedure of compiling with LaTeX, then BibTex to make the .bbl file, then compiling in LaTeX again. It is this last step which does not work. I end up with and "undefined control sequence error" in the .bbl file.

Here is the error:

\bibdata{Physics410PaperNotes,Physics410refs.bib} (./Physics410Paper.bbl ./Physics410Paper.bbl:1: Undefined control sequence. \bib@device ... {\hb@xt@ #1{\hfil \phantomsection \addcontentsline {toc}{sec... l.1 \begin{thebibliography}{1}

The strange thing is that if I just manually put the contents of the .bbl file into my document, the bibliography shows up!

Any help getting BibTeX to work for me would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Please provide a minimal working example (MWE) - in particular we need to know which documentclass you are using and what bibliography style, and perphas package, you load. –  Andrew Swann Oct 27 '13 at 15:48
