# Package calc Error: '!' invalid at this point

I "inherited" a huge manual written in tex. I should now update some lines. Unfortunately I am not a tex expert and get the following error not nailed down:

I get the Error Message: Package calc Error: '!' invalid at this point

``````(/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/fancybox/fancybox.sty
Style option: `fancybox' v1.4 <2010/05/15> (tvz)
) (/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/tools/multicol.sty))
(/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/draftcopy/draftcopy.sty
(/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/draftcopy/draftcopy.cfg)
Prints ENTWURF on pages; does not show in your DVI viewer
) (/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/ifsym/ifsym.sty
(/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/tools/calc.sty)
! Package calc Error: `!' invalid at this point.
See the calc package documentation for explanation.
Type  H <return>  for immediate help.
...
l.33 \newcounter{ifsymcnt}
``````

calc.sty does not really seem to be false. The only occurence of ! is here:

`````` \calc@open(#4!%
``````

and here

`````` \ifx#1!\let\calc@next\endgroup \else
``````

The file must have been compiled lately, unfortunately I do not find out how and who. So I assume that it would be more an environment question.

I user Ubunut 13.10 with tetex

Any hint would be great!

Thanks a lot Michael

I can't find the document class `handbuch_omi`. Could you provide a link? –  Dan Apr 1 at 22:21
well presumably there is a `!` where there should not be one, but since the fragment you have shown does not include a `!` it is pretty hard for anyone to say where the bad `!` is. –  David Carlisle Apr 1 at 22:23
However having `**` uncommented at the beginning of the last line in the preamble is likely to cause trouble... –  cfr Apr 2 at 1:59
With the packages you show in that part of the `log` file I'm not able to reproduce the issue. Can you add `\errorcontextlines=100` to the top of your document (in a line before `\documentclass`) and show the error message you get? –  egreg Apr 2 at 21:04
