# pdftex freezes on a simple hello world example

Operating system : Ubuntu 14.04 Tex distribution : Texlive-full installed with aptitude

I got an odd problem... hard to solve.

Here is the hello world tex file

\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

Hello world

\end{document}

and when I try to compile it with pdf latex I get

pdflatex hello_world.tex
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-1.40.14 (TeX Live 2013/Debian)
restricted \write18 enabled.

and that's all. It does nothing more, does not stop, does not write any error message, ... I already have reinstalled the texlive distribution and the problem is still there.

Any idea ?

Thanks !

It seems to be a problem with the format file (I miss the (preloaded format=pdflatex) in the output. Try to regenerate the format files (e.g. sudo fmtutil-sys --byfmt pdflatex or as user fmtutil --byfmt pdflatex). – Heiko Oberdiek Sep 8 '15 at 16:48
