I need to create a flowchart-like diagram (actually a tree) for documenting the internals of an operating system and a particular subsystem in it. I've been looking at tikz but haven't found yet any 'pre packaged' documentation detailing something that suits this purpose without much customization.

I would appreciate any answers to know which options exist, especially if they provide a certain degree of "artistic freedom" as to how the diagram should look like.

Well, certainly TikZ is an option. Have you seen the documentation and the examples at TeXample.net? Depending on the kind of tree, there could also be another options availabel. Can you please give an example of the kind of tree you need? – Gonzalo Medina Mar 30 '12 at 0:19
One example would be a dynamic memory allocator diagram. Or a cyclical-dependency diagram, where nodes might point at upper level ones again. I'm getting away with a bit of hackery through 'chains' but it's still less than perfect. Would love to see something I can use for computer science just like the chemistry people have amazing libraries for tikz. – soze Apr 10 '12 at 1:45
