I am trying to install the package ifetex manually. The repository does not provide a sty file, so I am following the instructions in this thread How can I manually install a package on MiKTeX (Windows), which says that I should run:

latex ifetex.ins

(on the directory where the file ifetex.ins lives)

However, when I do this, I get:

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.3-1.40.12 (MiKTeX 2.9) entering extended mode !

I can't find file `ifetex.ins'. <*> ifetex.ins

Please type another input file name:

How can I compile the file into a sty file?

Note:

I am on Windows. I can dir into my directory, I can also type ifetex.ins and type ifetex.dtx. Somehow I am only having this problem with the binaries tex, latex and pdflatex and pdftex.

Updates:

I am running the commands on this path: 

C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.9\tex\latex\ifetex

I have permissions, e.g. I can type any of the files:

type ifetex.ins

Are you sure you have permissions to do that? What directory did you save ifetex.ins in? – egreg May 7 '12 at 21:47

It's better to do the unpacking in a user directory and then move the .sty file. But why are you doing the installation manually? – egreg May 7 '12 at 22:13

In windows 7 (I doubt you are using it), you may have the permission to write, But inside the program files folder, latex/pdflatex will not be able to write the output files. You copy the .ins to some folder in desktop, then it should work well. – Harish Kumar May 7 '12 at 23:57
