Article contents aligned to left with svjour3 [closed]

I have an issue with the svjour3 document class where all of the contents in my article are positioned to the left of the page instead of center when I use a onecolumn format. The result is that there a bunch of empty space on the right side of the document. The examples from the Springer LaTeX bundle show clearly that the contents of a onecolumn article should be positioned at the center of the page.

I have tried compiling the default template which comes with the bundle without modifying anything, but the result is exactly the same. At this point I am not sure what might be causing this issue.

I am using MacTex version 2.0 and the template itself can be found here: Springer LaTeX Template

Here is the code I am using:

\begin{filecontents*}{example.eps}

gsave
newpath
20 20 moveto
20 220 lineto
220 220 lineto
220 20 lineto
closepath
2 setlinewidth
gsave
.4 setgray fill
grestore
stroke
grestore
\end{filecontents*}

\RequirePackage{fix-cm}

\documentclass[smallextended]{svjour3}
\smartqed
\usepackage{graphicx}

Please compose a fully compilable MWE that illustrates the problem including the \documentclass and the appropriate packages so that those trying to help don't have to recreate it. – Peter Grill May 22 '12 at 7:26
