# Having issues compiling with MiKTeX, perhaps a missing \item. It stems from my cuthesis.sty file (I think) [closed]

I am trying to write my thesis and downloaded the necessary templates from my school. I am using emacs to edit and MiKTeX 2.9 to compile. So what happens when I try to compile the document given without making any changes, I get an error about missing a \item \end{bibliography}

Here is what the thesis.tex looks like:

\documentclass[12pt,letterpaper]{report}
%
% Review cuthesis.sty for more documentation on available options
% for this package.

% Leave the below option as "masters," as it generates "thesis" on title page.
% PhD generates "dissertation" and that word is not recognized by Carleton Library
\usepackage[masters,2committee]{cuthesis}
\usepackage{array}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{cite}
\usepackage{subfigure}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage[indent,bf]{caption}

% ***** DEFINE VARIABLES *****
%-----------------------------------------------------------------------
% Define various variables required by cuthesis.sty to function properly

% Below you must write the program name, NOT the name of your school
% i.e: If you are getting a Doctor of Philosophy and are a student in NPSIA, you must write
% below: International Affairs and Public Policy because you are not getting a PhD in NPSIA.
% If you are getting a Master of Engineering you must
% write below: Aerospace or Civil or Electrical, etc.

% Define thesis title and author
\title{Thesis Title - DO NOT USE SYMBOLS}
% Name used must be name under which you are registered at Carleton University
\author{First then last name (eg: Jane Doe)}

% Specify your Thesis Submission Date

% Thesis committee information for the signature page
% Be sure to specify size of committee in cuthesis options.
% Department Chair does not count as a committee member.
% ie: 1committee = supervisor + department chair
%     2committee = supervisor + firstcommittee
%     3committee = supervisor + firstcommittee + secondcommittee
% Default setting is 1committee
\supervisor{Dr. Leroy Seuss, Supervisor}
\supervisor{other guy, Supervisor}
%\firstcommittee{J. Doe}
%\secondcommittee{F.Smith}
%\thirdcommittee{A. Mack}
%\fourthcommittee{B. Donner}
% Specify department chair
%\departmentchair{F. Hampson, Department Chair}
%\dept{Program Name}
% This is the name of the .bib files that holds all of your references.
% It can be a comma separated list if there is more than one file.
\reffile{references}

% Defines relative path to folder containing your figures
%\graphicspath{{figures/}}
%-----------------------------------------------------------------------

% ***** Thesis Components *****
%-----------------------------------------------------------------------
% Start inserting Thesis components. Title page, signature page,
% automatically.

% These are the names of the .tex files which hold the
% respective section of the thesis. If one of these sections
% is not included, comment out the corresponding line.
% If you want to print these sections, remove the percent sign (%)
%\abstract{abstract}
%\acknowledgements{acknowledgements}
%\contributions{contributions}

% Include the chapters.

\end{document}

Now I am kind of a noob, but I believe what is happening is that in the {cuthesis} package, when I start compiling, it creates a a.bbl file that contains

\begin{thebibliography}{}
\end{thebibliography}

Hence why I believe the \item missing comes from the way {cuthesis} is written.

Here is the cuthesis.sty in question:

    %
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
% This LaTeX package is used to create theses and dissertations at
% the Carleton University. It was was written by UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND
% and modified for use at Carleton University by Calvin Rans from the
% Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. It has several
% options which are described below. Multiple options can be included
% as a comma separated list. See the examples section for common uses. Some further alterations were made on behalf of the Carleton University Library by Joshua Kilberg.
%
%
%
% Options:
% manuscript,standard: this specifies which format of thesis you will
% be creating. Manuscript format has the references at the end of each
% chapter, while standard format has one reference section for the
% whole document. standard is the default.
%
% phd,masters: this specifies whether this is a PhD. dissertation
% or a masters thesis. masters is the default.
% DUE TO NEW CHANGES TO THE CARLETON LIBRARY SYSTEM, KEEP MASTERS
% SELECTED, EVEN IF YOU ARE GETTING A PHD

% 1committee, 2committee, 3committee,4committee,5committee: this is the number of people
% on your committee (in addition to the department chair), which determines how many signature lines
% are needed. Remember that the chairman of the committee
% does not sign the thesis. 1committee is the default.
%
% sequential,nonsequential: this specifies whether you want numbering
% of figures, equations, and tables reset to 1 at the beginning of
% each chapter (nonsequential), or if you want the numbers to
% be sequential throughout the whole document. The default is
% nonsequential for Manuscript format and sequential for
%     Standard format.
%
%
% Examples:
% For a standard format masters thesis:
%     \usepackage{cuthesis}
% CARLETON DOES NOT USE THE WORD DISSERTATION, SO STICK WITH MASTERS
% For a manuscript format PhD. dissertation:
%     \usepackage[manuscript,phd]{cuthesis}
%
% For a standard format PhD. dissertation with a four member committee:
%     \usepackage[phd,4committee]{cuthesis}
%
%
% Notes:
% Portions of this package were derived from the chapterbib
% package (Version 1.5 (09-OCT-1995) Donald Arseneau), therefore
% you should be sure not to use that package with this one due
%   to inevitable conflicts.
%
% You will also need the file cubiblio.bst for creating the
%   bibliography.
%
% This package has been designed to comply with the library's
% format guidelines using either a 10pt or 12pt font, which is
% specified in the \documentclass line.
%
% By default the department named on the title page is Mechanical
% and Aerospace Engineering, but that can be changed by putting the
%   command:
%     \dept{My Department}
% in the main .tex file before any of the chapters are included.
%
% The acknowledgements, contributions, and dedication sections are not
% required, but the abstract section is.

I would appreciate any help with this, thanks in advance, Julien

-
 How are you inserting the references? Note that there is a command \def\thesisbib{\chapter*{Bibliography. I guess that you have to know how to cite. Or, if you are compiling using some button maybe it is running latex + bibtex. Try to compile only using latex, just one time. The .bbl file is created by bibtex. bibtex looks for the .bib file. But I guess that in your case, you dont have this file. So, how are you including your references? – Sigur Jul 1 '12 at 17:36 Ok, I forgot to mention this happens when I am not even trying to reference anything. The files I am trying to call in,l such as chapter one, have nothing written in them. – Julien Jul 1 '12 at 19:16 I use MiKTeX 2.9, I tried doing just pdflatex, and it worked the first time, and then tried to go pdflatex +makeindex +bibtex, and it failed giving me this error: (E:\School\CarletonLatexTemplate\chapter1.tex Chapter 1. ) [1] (E:\School\CarletonLatexTemplate\thesis.bbl ! LaTeX Error: Something's wrong--perhaps a missing \item. See the LaTeX manual or LaTeX Companion for explanation. Type H for immediate help. ... l.4 \end{thebibliography} – Julien Jul 1 '12 at 19:24 I'll add 1 more, the thesis.bbl file it creates on it's own stays even if I delete it. Meaning it will come back when I try to compile. The thesis.bbl file contains: <\begin{thebibliography}{} \newcommand{\enquote}[1]{`#1''} \end{thebibliography}> – Julien Jul 1 '12 at 19:33 Just use the MIT thesis templates :) – Julien Jul 2 '12 at 3:23
