Whenever I use $inline$ math mode, all the characters are rendered much heavier than the normal text, making it appear that I have bolded these sections of text. Is this intended behaviour or is it a font mismatch? Any idea how I can get them to match even a little?

EDIT: \boldmath was hidden in the header. Once removed, everything renders as normal

Welcome to TeX.SE. Can you make a little example starting from \documentclass{...} and ending with \end{document}? Please include the relevant packages too. – percusse Jul 18 '12 at 15:11
I apologize. I had \boldmath buried in the header where I couldn't see it. That was the problem – Matthew Jul 18 '12 at 15:19
No problem at all. Making a small example always helps for me too. Since the problem is solved we will most probably close this one as too localized. – percusse Jul 18 '12 at 15:40
