I am using the book class for my PhD thesis, but graduate school does't want the section symbol in front of the section title. How can remove the symbol?

The default behaviour for the book class doesn't include any symbols, so there must be something else going on in your document. Please provide a minimal complete example document reproducing the undesired behaviour. – Gonzalo Medina Nov 2 '12 at 15:40
