I'm using TeXnicCenter in Windows and was working with my latex-file compiling it to pdf. Everything worked just fine untill at some point I couldn't save the latex-file anymore. The error message was something along the lines: ...cannot create the file already exists.

I tried to get over this by saving a copy of the file with another name. This works but now I cannot remove the original file because according to Windows the file is open in pdflatex.exe. I doubt this isn't true as I can use pdflate to compile other files.

What should I do?

P.S. My tags may be wrong - not really sure what the correct one would be.

Welcome to TeX.sx! Try opening the Windows Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+Del), go to the Processes tab and end the pdflatex.exe process. :) – Paulo Cereda Nov 22 '12 at 11:57
Actually I tried to restart my computer but for some reason that didn't do the trick. Manually terminating the process from the taskmanager worked however. Thank you both for your help! – KPK Nov 22 '12 at 12:02
