I typeset a book using kpfonts. The printer says he needs the original font files, but I could not find them anywhere. I found the .pfb and .atm files for the type1 version, but cannot do anything them.

What do you think I can do now?

The .pfb files are the font files. But the glyphs should already be embedded in the PDF file, so I can't understand why the printer is asking for them. – egreg Nov 28 '12 at 21:41

OK, I understand that. But can I just give the printer all the .pfb files and tell him to used them as he can? I believe he wants them for prepress purposes. – NVaughan Nov 28 '12 at 21:43
PS. The printer is texnically impaired. He just takes the PDF (and sometimes the fonts and images). – NVaughan Nov 28 '12 at 21:44
Just talked with the editor. She told me they need the very same fonts to typeset an addendum to the book. But they are using InDesign for that. – NVaughan Nov 28 '12 at 21:47

The solution (sort of): I created a font sample in LaTeX, and converted the PDF into a TIFF file. Then I uploaded it to the WhatTheFont website, to look for similar types. Not surprisingly, it gave me Palatino Linotype as a match. (!!!) Anyway, that's what I gave the printer, and he's happy now. Just to be clear: I don't think the two are really similar, and that's that. – NVaughan Nov 28 '12 at 22:31
