I am looking to install some LaTeX packages which are not on the default MikTeX distribution. I have accessed the Package Manager and right clicked on the package I wish to download in order to 'install'. It begins to download, but then a 'MikTeX Problem Report' window pops up with 'Windows API error 5: Access is denied'

Does anyone know what is going on here? Is there something I have to do preliminary to using the Package manager?

Are you using the admin mode of the package manager? – percusse Jan 1 at 13:19
How can I tell and how would I change it? – CAF Jan 1 at 13:21
You can select it in the MikTeX folder in the start menu. OTherwise look for the mpm_mfc_admin.exe file instead of mpm_mfc.exe. If the MikTeX is not 2.9 don't bother just update it by the way. – percusse Jan 1 at 13:25

It might be the case that you have installed only for your account only(opposed to all users) and your account is not an admin. It seems better to reinstall it with a user with admin rights instead of fixing it – percusse Jan 1 at 14:01

You need to know if your user account (the one that you use to login your machine) has admin rights or not otherwise you need to log in as an administrator. – percusse Jan 1 at 14:37
