Different rendering between TeX Live and MiKTeX? [closed]

I'm working with LaTeX both with TeX Live on Linux and MiKTeX on Windows. I though that both system were equivalent, but I have some tex files that produce underfull hboxes on one system and not on the other.

Is it normal? I though that a tex file would produce the same output everywhere... Is there a mean to have the same output on both systems?

Without more detail it's hard to say what the cause is here. We'd need to see the `.log` files, or at least the `File List` (assuming LaTeX) to find any version differences. I'd also check you have the same settings for a4/letter paper. – Joseph Wright Jan 9 at 20:59
If you have the same engine and file versions then the output should be the same (differences at the binary level between MiKTeX and TeX Live should be only in interaction with the system, file finding, etc., and not with output). – Joseph Wright Jan 9 at 21:05
@LionelMANSUY given the same input the output should be the same, but it's easy to have different config files in the paths that change things, or just different versions of packages. If it is latex then adding \listfiles to the preamble should be a useful start – David Carlisle Jan 9 at 21:06
My bet: non-english language, no proper hyphenation patterns preloaded in the format. Hint: compare first lines in .log file – JLDiaz Jan 9 at 21:13
if words are still hyphenated and broken across lines, then the (default) patterns for u.s. english are probably being used. that wouldn't give a good result for french, and may very well be the reason for differences in your output. (english patterns won't hyphenate any words that contain accented letters, so long words may be migrating to a new line, resulting in underfull hbox messages.) – barbara beeton Jan 9 at 21:30
