Typesetting with XeLaTeX gives an excellent PDF which when opened and printed from Adobe Reader mirrors on paper what one sees onscreen.

Printing the PDF from TeXworks reduces the print size by circa 50% (same printer etc).

I did not specify OS Windows 7 but otherwise my question stands. Why does "print PDF" from TeXworks/MikTex not mirror what I see onscreen whereas opening the self-same PDF file in Adobe Reader and printing that does?

As far as I know, TeXworks has no direct PDF printing facility. Use Adobe Reader or other software for printing. – egreg Jan 11 at 11:16
Welcome to TeX.SE! Please indicate which operating system you use. Under MacOS X at least, TeXworks can't do printing on its own; to print, another PDF viewer (such as Adobe Reader or Acrobat) has to be used. – Mico Jan 11 at 11:25
On Windows there is a Print Pdf item in File menu. – marczellm Jan 11 at 11:33
MikTeX (>=2.8) ships with its own version of TexWorks, with enabled printing: docs.miktex.org/2.8/relnotes/#id517304 – Habi Jan 11 at 14:50

As others have said, this does not read as a question as it stands. The PDF printing feature in TeXworks is also a MiKTeX-specific addition, and any issue with it is going to have to be fixed by the MiKTeX developer. As such, this is a bug report, which we can't hope to answer. Over all, I am going to close as 'Not A Real Question': please edit and ask for re-opening if appropriate. – Joseph Wright Jan 12 at 8:01
