I am working with a program at my university that will videorecord my lectures, take my slides, and bundle them together into a movie to be put on the web, iTunesU, etc. They have asked me to produce PowerPoint slides at the standard (standard for PPT, that is) 10" by 7.5" size with a 1" margin on the top and a 2" margin on the bottom. This is to align with other logo elements put on the screen later and to allow for subtitles. I have a workflow but I'm asking if there might be a better one.
Producing PowerPoint is not going to be a big problem for me. I can use PDF2Keynote, then open in Keynote and save as PowerPoint. That might even be AppleScriptable, hm...
Instead of coercing beamer
to create margins on my slides, I am thinking about using pgfpages
to rescale the slide's page size and place it on the physical page with the requested margins. Then the version that I put on the projector in the classroom would not use pgfpages
and wouldn't have the margins (why would it need them anyway?)
When I sent a proof-of-concept to the program coordinators they asked if I could make the left and right margins smaller. The answer is no without changing the aspect ratio of the slide. With the top and bottom margins so constrained and a 4:3 aspect ratio of the logical slide, the left and right margins have to be 2". But if I produce slides in a 16:9 ratio, scale them and place them on the page with 1" margin at the top and 2" margin at the bottom, the left and right margins will be 1". So that all works out. I'm just slightly worried it will be suboptimal in class because the projector is still 4:3 and I will have to show letterboxed slides.
Is there any part of this process that I could do a better way? I had thought about using beamerposter
to set the paper size to 20.32cm by 11.43cm, then scaling all the fonts up. This might look a bit better than scaling 16cm by 9cm PDFs up to that size. But screwing with the paper size is strongly discouraged by beamer, so I don't know how much extra work that's going to cause.
beamer
version do you use? Vedran has made altering the aspect ratio a bit easier, so it might be possible to get close usingbeamer
without too much pain.aspectratio=169
to produce slides 160x90mm.
