I see lots of mention of microtype beta-08, including on the tlcontrib page itself, but my downloaded version (from that page) reports itself as:

2011/08/18 v2.5 beta-07

when I run LuaLaTeX.

Am I missing the real beta-08 somewhere, or is what I have really the most recent version, please?

Welcome to TeX.SE! I would assume that it's a simple oversight by the author to increment the beta version number from 7 to 8 in the package file. –  Mico Feb 18 '13 at 23:56

thanks @Mico, I assumed as much, but wanted to check I was not missing some new goodness, especially as the last revision was quite some time ago. –  cdmackay Feb 19 '13 at 0:06

In PDFLaTeX it writes in the log file “Package: microtype 2011/09/05 v2.5 <beta-08>”. –  Speravir Feb 19 '13 at 1:28

thanks @Speravir; where did you get your version? If I grep the files in the pkg, that text does not appear anywhere. –  cdmackay Feb 19 '13 at 1:54

I got it once from the now offline Microtype page on the XeLateX wiki site, IIRC. And as I see now, it clearly states in microtype.sty “\ProvidesPackage {microtype} [2011/09/05 v2.5 <beta-08> Micro-typographical refinements (RS)]” (line breaks and some spaces removed). –  Speravir Feb 19 '13 at 2:01
