comment ntheorem placement of thmmarks wrong
You can place a nonbreaking space, i.e. the character ~, instead of the last line of text which is now commented out. This is just a quick hack to make it work, though ... on the other hand, you will not get any better results, because the equation tag (1) is in the spot where the star would really want to be. This seems to be some misbehaviour of ntheorem indeed, it does not even work when you use \documentclass[leqno]{article}.

comment Obeylines in letterhead
Although it's bad news, it's quite conclusive. Thanks for the clarification.

comment Create a resizable symbol?
So that's basically a "no", right? Assuming that the symbol is not already extendible in the font I am using, there is no way to make it extendible?

comment Double slashes close together with resizing
Actually, I think that this is a whole different question, so I made it one.

comment Double slashes close together with resizing
First of all, thanks. This is very help- and insightful. I have one more question, though: Is there any way to make this work with \left. and \right., in the sense that the \dslash is resized automatically?

comment Double slashes close together with resizing
Picture a situation where X and H are replaced by something much larger. I do not see why biggl and biggr are completely useless. Can you elaborate?

comment How to typeset categories with long names?
It is not like that is good practice, but you could add \sloppy to your preamble. It will allow Latex to break the line even when there is too much space to fill with the few words before the linebreak.

comment Optional argument to \item to appear in brackets after the counter
No no, don't worry, this is precisely what I wanted. I am using cleveref anyway.

It's basically in the comment to Peters answer, but I put it in the original question as well.

That's clever! Also, it does exactly what I want. Also, exercise solved. Thanks a bunch! =)

Just with 2, as in, with the usual counter value.
