comment LuaTeX error “Parsing CFF DICT”
I think this question can safely be deleted (if that is normal policy) since the bug report I filed on the LuaTeX bug tracker comes up quite easily when looking for the issue, and that site includes a description of the cause and the version when it was resolved.

This does work but I need to brush up on vsplit. I'll accept this if I can't come up with any other ideas in the next day or so.

This is the proper syntax in Lua 5.2 which is used by current versions of LuaTeX. While in the mathematical sense log(0) doesn't make sense but Lua returns -inf. This doesn't cause issues in many other contexts but for some reason here is helps contribute to a font-based error and I don't know why.

the comma in math.log(0,10) is to make 10 the base for the logarithm, Lua returns -inf in this case

comment Using mdframed after a section heading
Thanks for the walkthrough. I was going through what you went over in chat, and I tried experimenting with some of the definitions in mdframed.sty. In the definition of the environment mdframed, if I comment out the line \color{mdf@fontcolor}, the \pdfcolorstack item disappears from the log. If I comment out the \mdf@trivlist{\mdf@skipabove@length} then the \glue 0.0 disappears. However the page will still break at that point. So unless I am missing something, I don't think it is the \glue 0.0 mentioned in the chat.

comment PGF keys error with key filter for keys containing \par
great that was very helpful. i figured something was missing long, but had trouble getting it work work until reading this. my original problem was with pgfkeys@install@filter@and@invoke@, which is in itself a hard command to find in this enormous package.
