If you use align* environment, you should not see these numbers! However, if you do use align environment, this may be achieved globally (and locally with little modifications) by \renewcommand{\theequation}{\arabic{equation}}

This has come up several types. This is possible with counters. Just define a new counter, call it defntype, which is \alph and hook that counter to this environment.
