comment How to put the thank you slide style into a beamertheme?
I don't have a solution for you, just a strong recommendation: Do not automate such things. Making it optional with some sort-of switch, option, special command or whatever, is the way to go here.

comment Few of my chapters are overshooting 1page or more?
I can't reproduce the problem. I think you should follow the procedure described in [meta.tex.stackexchange.com/questions/228/… just been asked to write a minimal example, what is that?) Without a MWE that shows the problem we can hardly help you.

comment umlaut vs. diaeresis (double-dot)
@ToddHarrop Umlaut used to be an e after the vowel that moved above the vowel and degraded to two dots.

Hi, \section{\texorpdfstring{$\varepsilon$}{e}SOA} is what you are looking for. It has been discussed here before, I'll try to find it.

comment Slow compilation without sudo
Hi there, this sounds like a strange and interesting phenomenon. I'm not an expert, but it seems strange that LaTeX tries to access a lot of files in your home dir. Maybe some TeX paths are set improperly?...

That shouldn't matter. Would you please provide a minimal example showing your situation?

Hi. Have you seen subequations environment from the package amsmath? I think it can help you with what you need.

comment Use truetype Comic Sans font in XeTeX
Other than that, there's the package mathastext which helps to use the text font even in math mode. However, I think it is not a good idea. Preparing a proper math font is more than just taking some glyphs somewhere and using them for typesetting math. For instance, Comic Sans misses the blackboard letters completely that you use for the complex field.

comment Is there a 'good' way to make 'local' changes outside of a group in expl3?
Ah I didn't realize that \choice is a part of UI. Then this solution seems to be good.
