comment Tikz overlay with subfig, axis & externalize
You could try to put both plots in the same tikzpicture environment. That should work with your overlays. Only your 'subfloat'-caption will not work as easy as it does now. But you could maybe use a 'hphantom'-box to get it right?

You could use the block-environment for the box. But the outcome does strongly depend on your chosen beamertheme. Without any there is no box with block

comment Missing $ inserted in block environment
that ist true, the option with {\ } adds a little space above the content inside the block environment, which is kind of nice in my opinion

comment Missing 'pi'-Symbol from euler font in sans serif?
Thanks again! I am using the helvet-package, but -stupid me- I did load it after eulervm. There are some greek letters still missing. For now I use the \uppi fom the upgreek-package, but I have to look further or change the math-font away from euler.

comment Missing 'pi'-Symbol from euler font in sans serif?
Thanks for the hint to \mathversion. I did not know that. But when I get your answer correctly, the euler font does not contain a sans-serif pi, which is very unfortunate.

Thanks, that also works in TexLive2010. But is there a solution to get the computer modern math font (cmm) working, too?
