Yes, upgrading seemed to fix this problem. Not sure if I should delete my question or not.

Thank you for testing it out. It sounds like I should upgrade pdftex (I had hesitated as it is on a server but trying to do it now).

Thanks Paul, this is a wonderful answer and clarifies much of what I was considering.

Ah, sorry - I'm getting carried away. Do you think I should move the LoF question to be a separate question completely?

comment Customizing the list of figures (LOF) style using tufte-latex
oh, wow! Thank you. I just tested it out, and am curious how to make two minor modifications. The first is that for a long figure title, a line is skipped underneath. The second, is how can I add dots to run from text to the number?

comment Methods to edit column order in an existing LaTeX table?
Also very useful to know! Apparently you can do this in TextWrangler using a "rectangular selection" function with the command Option-drag or shift-option-click (though I can't get it to work).

That's very useful to know. Do you choose a space as your delimiter when importing?

comment Methods to edit column order in an existing LaTeX table?
Hi @MarkS.Everitt I just edited it - feel free to change it if you think it can be clearer. I'm amazed at all the great suggestions in response to this question.

I'm starting to understand it; thanks again. regexp is something I have tried to learn several times. It did work (though stripped out some of the &).

comment Methods to edit column order in an existing LaTeX table?
@AlanMunn I don't see this ability in any of the tools mentioned. I'm familiar with some of them, but generally they seem to be useful for generating the table initially, not for editing an existing Latex table (though maybe I have not looked thoroughly enough).

Thanks David - I'll try it out. That is a mind-melting regular expression.

perfect. Thanks, I did not realize that \usepackage[draft]{graphicx} handled the image size.

This does work (thank you). It creates a small offset unless the cell contents are touching the code (no whitespace).

comment Controlling the exact position of objects on a page
Are there any special considerations if I put a figure into the textblock? It works on TexWorks for me, but not with latex on my server. I get a variety of error messages, the first being You can't use \prevdepth' in restricted horizontal mode.`

It's just a one page document so there is no repetition.

comment Controlling the exact position of objects on a page
For a simple example, if I do the following: \begin{picture}(0,0) \put(6,3){}{text} \end{picture} this does not quite work for repositioning, but it does appear on the page. How can I adjust the location? I found it a little hard to understand what all the arguments are in the above example.

comment Justification when using the dramatist package
perfect! Thank you. I chose to edit the line \begin{itemize}[labelwidth=25pt,leftmargin=20pt]} and manually inserted the values which I found easier.
