comment @namedef and math mode
@MarcoDaniel: \labelretrieve is meant to be \labelget, made a mistake with "copying and pasting" from two different files. That the command \label requires an anchor has nothing to do with it, I think. Else it wouldn't even work in text mode.

comment How does one set custom labels for description lists?
This seems to be answering my comments here. (For those who didn't read through the whole thread; incidentally this also means that the hyperref package is used for this answer.)

comment Convert from historic LaTeX-based software called “The Publisher”
Lastly, this seems to be the basic help file for the program written in its own markup language. The last paragraph states "ArborText was founded in 1982 by David L. Rodgers, James J. Sterken, and Paul B. Grosso." The syntax looks to be something similar to XML; presumably it is not too hard to write a PanDoc parser to convert the mark-up to LaTeX or HTML + MathJax.

The software is apparently in a suite made by a company called ArborText: cs.rutgers.edu/~watrous/txt/681

Wow... the program dates to at least 1988. Here's a website from UBC in 1994 describing their local licensed copy: astro.ubc.ca/resources/Computing/WordProc/publisher.html
