comment Two column equation block with vertical separator
May I request one small modification? What would happen if there are 2 subequations?

That indeed does it! Thank you very much! I wish there were a less hackish way, but this works too!

Thanks for the input! Actually, I wanted to have the text side-by-side with the equation, and the visible vertical line between the equation and the text, not between the 'where' and the rest of the text :)

comment How to write “ä” and other umlauts and accented letters in bibliography?
It would be really helpful if some kind fellow could update this answer for XeLaTeX too, because that does not support inputenc.

comment Change font in a single paragraph
OP did not mandate the use of PdfLaTeX, and for those who use IDE like software for LaTeX work can just switch to XeLaTeX using some easy option. This is much more neat compared to the methods that require finding the LaTeX friendly font family names, which actually look nothing like the human readable versions of them. But fontspec would just accept the human readable version, which is really convenient.

comment Is there a way to use a document class/package from another folder?
It is very surprising though that in all of these answers and similar posts, nobody could mention a way to locally include a documentclass file by relative path. I have seen people do that before, but I have been out of practise for quite some time and now I cannot figure out how to do it :(
