comment Defining subfamilies for a font
So, in other words, there is no way to import a font from local files that would make the latex font weight commands to work out of the box beyond medium and bold?

Great answer! Thank you! Will the commands \textmd and \textlf also automatically work after this?

comment Aliasing an imported font to be reused later?
Thank you! Your answer is the most readable one in my opinion. Hence marked as the correct answer. I never knew about the NFSSFamily option. That is exactly the 'alias' I was referring to :)

I basically wish for the option to swap main fonts later by using aliases. If I replace \setmainfont with \newfontfamily\ebgaramondfamily, and then do \setmainfont{\ebgaramondfamily}, the compilation freezes and never ends.

May I request one small modification? What would happen if there are 2 subequations?

That indeed does it! Thank you very much! I wish there were a less hackish way, but this works too!

Thanks for the input! Actually, I wanted to have the text side-by-side with the equation, and the visible vertical line between the equation and the text, not between the 'where' and the rest of the text :)
