@PierPaolo A spy plot, yes..but without using \spy. The questions you referenced look very interesting, however, as far as I can see, they don't address the problem of specifying width and height of the inset in parent axis coordinates.

@percusse Log file says document has been generated with the most recent feature set (\pgfplotsset{compat=1.9}. So version 1.9, I guess.

Thanks for your prompt and detailed answer. Could you modify the example so that the ref{} command prints Fig. x instead of only the number and is still bold for the first time? Sorry for not having been specific enough in my question.
