TeX enthusiast since almost 25 years and making a living from it since almost 10.

Member of DANTE, the german user group, I organised their user meeting in dortmund in '99.

I'm the author of the hopefully-long-forgotten TeXPower package and a commercial data based publishing system named DocScape which can do wondrous things ;-)

Could you elaborate a little? I assume this will requite LUATeX? Could you reconstruct the MWE from the question so that it will work with LuaTeX?

comment How to avoid widow lines after displayed equations
@HendrikVogt It wouldn't be too much work to patch other displayed math environments this way, as almost every one of them ends directly in $$, which is the place where this patch should go. But the question is really how much sense this would make. For instance, when page breaking inside an align environment is allowed, you'd get a "widow line" anyway because it'd break off together with some equation lines.

Nice account of the actual reasons for it all :-)

I think it's the same for everyone else as for you :-) Note that when a user defines macros with \newcommand, he will get notified of duplications also with macros defined by \def, so for the kernel, it's mostly irrelevant. Also (a) some code was copied from TeX plain or packages and (b) sometimes you need delimited arguments. LaTeX3 will have a cleaner interface.

@HendrikVogt Yes I was too lazy adding the penalty. It should work better with my edit. As I said, only proof of concept at the moment :-)

+1 thanks for taking up the duty :-)

Note that TeX is in horizontal mode after \] with \ignorespaces active, so the end of the tighten environment together with the trailing space somehow produces an empty paragraph. Possibly putting \ignorespaces at the end of the tighten environment (and avoiding redundant spaces) could avoid this.

That's exactly the problem. I know nothing about that. I tried to make a test file and noticed the typo in this moment. I think it would be better (for other people finding your question) if you'd self-answer (unless you can find someone else).

You have a typing error here: \pgfsysprotocol@literal{/pgfpcmjk cs #2 #3 #4 #5 /pgfpat#1\space scn}. If I replace pgfpcmjk by pgfpcmyk I get no error message.
