comment Inconsistent superscript placement in $q_x^{n_x} q_y^{n_y}$
Can you comment on the relationship between these solutions and the \displaystyle solution proposed in the comments?

@campa No, that's probably enough. I'd be interested to know why it works, but I'm happy with that.

comment How does LaTeX know the page number of a reference?
Related: How to diagnose a permanent “Label(s) may have changed” warning?. The change in pages you note can lead to an infinite loop if the right combination of bad luck hits you.

comment LaTeX presentation issues on Windows machines and overhead projector?
One common cause of fuss with pdf presentations is finding out how to go to full screen - as opposed to modern versions of powerpoint, there's no big button to do it. Be sure to figure out how to do this before you go on stage, and you'll eliminate at least one source of things that can get you flustered and on edge at the start of your talk.

comment Is it possible to have a two-column figure caption in revtex?
Code works as expected. Not to say that I'll keep it, but it's nice that the tool is out there. Thanks again for your input.

comment Is it possible to have a two-column figure caption in revtex?
Thanks for the input. Shorter captions was of course the first thing I considered but this is really the minimal form I want to keep. (The figures are what keeps this long paper going and interesting, and I need someone who's skimming the paper to be able to get a sense of the figure from just its caption.) I'll try out your code on Monday and see how well it does against the double-column-on-double-column drawback.

I'd be interested in your take on whether this is advisable for this specific example, btw ;).

comment Is it possible to have a two-column figure caption in revtex?
Well, the preprint is already on the arXiv (figure 5 here), but I'll probably re-upload with an accepted version once that exists. The journal will most likely kill it, of course. Mostly, I just wanted to play around with it and see whether it works or not - it's a huge, complex figure with a very long caption that I don't want to cut, and it makes for very difficult reading in its current huge-block-of-text form. If there's something that can make it easier to read, at least on the arXiv version, then I'm happy to grab it.

Thanks for this. I'll give it a whirl on Monday.

comment Is there a pdf crop utility for windows that will give smaller files?
@fileunderwater The overall goal is to compress the files after they have been cropped, if I remember correctly, or to crop them directly to a smaller file size. It's been a long time, though, so if you think there's a specific query that would lead people here that isn't covered here yet by all means add an answer to address it.

comment Removing double punctuation when SI units with dots occur at the end of a sentence
@Jost I'm aware of that but honestly I think it's not terrible. I would like to see a proper fix, however.

comment Removing double punctuation when SI units with dots occur at the end of a sentence
@Joseph I know, which is why I hedged and apologized :). It's not great with consistency, but that's what people use, and anything else in my particular case would just be awkard. (For example, the momentum would be $p=\sqrt{2E_\mathrm{H}}$ in your suggested notation.) Journals do use the dotted a.u.; see e.g. this guidance from Phys. Rev. C.

comment Biblatex: submitting to a journal
Another caveat, right off the bat: biblatex is plain incompatible with REVTeX, which is the required style for most APS, AIP, OSA and AAS (physics) journals.

Thanks, I'll give it a look. That package may solve the problem in this question.

comment How to influence the position of float environments like figure and table in LaTeX?
Is there some strong, specific typesetting reason why double-column floats cannot be placed at the bottom of the page? If not, is there some workaround to permit this?

comment Two-columns wide figure at the bottom of a page with Revtex
From this answer, apparently There is no bottom area for page-wide floats in two-column mode. Because who would ever want that, right?

comment Why does my Mathematica figure not work with PSFrag?
I just found, belatedly, this duplicate in StackOverflow. I guess that's what happens to newcomers who don't search parent sites, and to questions that don't get migrated out of them.

@Werner I'm running Mathematica 9.0.1 over Ubuntu 12.04. I'm not sure at all what different versions or OSs will do.
