comment Installing TeXlive on Ubuntu, revisited
Oh, I got the impression that it was supposed to happen automatically. I guess it's what I did then (dummy package as mentioned in @krlmlr's answer.

Yes, but what I mean is that I don't see this happening: "apt is notified of the install so it will not try to install TeX Live packages that are already installed". How is that supposed to work?

comment Installing TeXlive on Ubuntu, revisited
Can I see somewhere in for example synaptic how the locally installed Texlive satisfies the package dependencies? I have just installed TL2014 right now and it did not appear to interact with the apt system. I have used this approach to trick apt so far: tug.org/texlive/debian.html#vanilla

This sort of works for me; in my example, the link says "mailto:Ole-Bent Kj%C3%A6r <some.address@some.domain.dk>" when hovered in the PDF, but it does get translated to "æ" in the email client when clicked. Maybe this is an issue with the PDF viewer (evince)?

comment LaTeX command for unknown symbol
This looks like a very nice solution. One thing, though: looking at your three-size example, the symbol seems to scale bit odd with the font. The up-/down-y seems to scale less down than the letters. Furthermore, the line thinkness does not seem to scale, so the symbol looks more "bold" for smaller font sizes.

In my experience, datatool quickly makes compiling the document horribly slow.

Ah, OK. I had a space after the \mbox{}.

An \mbox seems to take up a little bit of horizontal space, whereas \leavevmode\null suggested by @barbara-beeton does not. P.S. I avoided the above solution because I was trying to accomplish it with a simple one-liner, not requiring extra packages such as xhfill.

Great, that does the trick.
