comment tikz picture: draw opacity vs fill opacity?
Worked just fine for me and was easy to implement. Thanks.

comment tikz tree fork down edge labels
I'd like for the text to run horizontally but be positioned just to the right of that vertical line. Imagine if I had placed that blue text in a horizontal line 2mm to the right of the center of that first vertical line stemming from the 3.

So "try using to[zigzag] rather than trying to manually recreate that behavior yourself each time".

Your comment is ridiculous. How is it a "do it for me" question when I very specifically (in bold font no less) said, "tell me how you think about the question" and NOT "tell me how to do it". In fact, I don't care at all about how to do the particular graphic I pasted. It was merely a categorical example.

comment tikz graphics slightly cropped
@percusse: Removing the thick helps everywhere except on the portions on the ellipse. Removing line width=2pt and thick fixes everything, but in the end I need lines thicker than the default.

@Qrrbrbirlbel: No, I don't use either of those.

@HarishKumar: The missing part is just the highlighted parts are noticeably thinner than they should be. It shows up for me in all my viewers.

Hmmm... Using MikTeX 2.9, PDF-LaTeXing and that is the output as viewed in Acrobat. I shall investigate further...

I came to post this method (which is what I use), but Thorsten did it first and did it very well!

Ha! I saw that one while searching. It's on my "things to figure out how to do" list. ;-)

@Harish: That is terrific. Exactly what I was after. Thanks!

comment Appending a line (of fixed length) to a spring drawn with tikz coil
@Harish: I edited my solution to incorporate your advice. Notice that I needed to pass two arguments into your \myfig: the length of the spring section and segment length in the coil decoration, so I wasn't able to code it as pretty as yours, but the final result is what I was after. Thanks for your help.

Nice solution, and it works across multiple pages.

comment Rotated, running text in right margin?
You are right, Harish. However, in my instance, I only needed it on one page. Of course, others' mileage may vary.

comment Appending a line (of fixed length) to a spring drawn with tikz coil
I tried exactly that, changing \coordinate (bottomspring) at (0,-3cm); from -3cm to -4cm to -5cm to -6cm to -7cm and the mass stayed constant and the platform moved: take a look at this picture Of course, I want the platform to be constant and the mass to vary.

This does not seem to work when the object in the tabular is a tikzpicture. Ideas?

Thanks, I have not used the background package before.
