@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez That as well, good suggestion.

Maybe a low rep user could compile all this info into an answer including the centering information, the horizontal lines and the automatic mathmode setup.

Does adding \hline after your \\ 's do what you want?

Can you replace \_write_expression: with an appropriate \seq_use as in changing parse expressions to \cs_new:Npn \_parse_expressions:n #1 { \seq_set_split:Nnn \l_collection_of_expressions_seq {,} {#1} \seq_put_right:Nx \l_formatted_expressions_seq { 3^{\seq_use:Nn \l_collection_of_expressions_seq {x2-} x2-}} } and eliminating write expressions.

comment Definitions of mathematical terms and declaration of symbols
Which document class are you using and in what way is your definition environment defined? What I take from the question is that she wants to set a flag in the definition environment to indicate that the term has been defined and have the \simplealgebra command check the flag and throw an error if it hasn't been set. Is that a reasonable understanding Cristi?

comment How is expl3 typed?
Initially, a comma separates the items in a clist while a \seq_item:n separates the items in a seq. So the \l_tmpa_clist contains \seq_item:n {someitem}, and has no fifth item so \clist_item:Nn \some_seq 5 returns nothing. I guess that the "typing" is in the structure of the storage format (?).

comment Problem with newly defined command and special chars
Typing \show\aa shows that \aa is defined as \r a which is causing the problem. I'm not sure how you can maintain your use of \r however.

comment How can I highlight ligatures?
I'm probably not the one to explain, but callbacks in lua provide points in the processing of the document where one can insert their own code. There are a lot of them. One is the ligaturing callback, which would let you run code when the ligatures are actually being inserted. Here is a document that gives an overview.

It might even be dead easy with the ligaturing callback. I've never used it so can't say for sure.

There is some code on site that works to suppress ligatures (here and here). It might be a starting point or modified to color them rather than suppressing them.
