comment Is it possible to compile asymptote(.asy) file without displaying the figure
It's strange that even with -noV and with all those options, asymptote still pops up a window (that closes almost immediately). That's annoying when your Makefile calls asymptote 30 times, for example! (30 windows popping up, one each three or five seconds -- that means I have to stop working).

comment Asymptote generates different output whether running in interactive mode or from pdflatex
Well, not using inline seems to mess up the document somehow (3d images are included over the text, as if no space was reserved for them)... But I've found that if I use \usepackage[inline,attach]{asymptote} with \usepackage[dvips]{attachfile2}, and settings.embed=true in my asydef, it works!

Thank you!!! settings.outformat makes no difference, but remving the inline option fixes the problem. I suppose, then, that this is a bug in asymptote (or more precisely, in its interface with LaTeX), right?

Yes -- I have seen the question about implicit functions with pgfplots, but that's for 2d only. Implicit functions of two variables (that is, defined using three variables) are a bit trickier. So far I have been parameterizing them (I tell Maxima to solve the equation for z, then use the result), but that's not a perfect solution...)

comment plot 3d graphs of functions defined implicitly
Well, it's not that there is a function that doesn't work, but rather that there doesn't seem to be any package that will plot functions defined implicitly. I'll add one example function to the description.
