comment Short names for macros
@Jukka: Niel's answer will work with any character—just replace " with whatever you want. (Except @, which will break at \makeatother.) You might want to do something like \newcommand\quote{"} first, though, if you use a character you need to type sometimes.

Brilliant! Thanks for looking at this ancient question—and for such a thorough fix.

@Aaron: In the end, I scrubbed the whole thing, so I'm afraid I won't be much help, sorry.

comment Alternatives to \sideset and \nolimits?
@David: This site doesn't have math-tex, since most of the time we're discussing the TeX itself, not the math. I took the liberty of embedding the desired image in your question.

comment Why is the ifthen package obsolete?
@Konrad: When aren't they the same? I'd be happy to switch away from ifthen, but that's the one feature of it I use most of the time.

comment Listings alternative
While I like minted (its output is also significantly nicer), it's worth noting that it does slow down compilation noticeably.

comment Alternate he / she in text
I fully support the use of singular they instead. It avoids the problems with the gendered words; it's used in actual speech; it's the clearest option; and it's attested as far back as 1300, having been used by such notable authors as Chaucer and Shakespeare. Prescriptivism can go hang :-)

comment What's a good package for typesetting quantum circuits?
The circuitikz package is for drawing electrical circuits; quantum circuits are almost completely different. It might be adaptable, but then you probably might as well be using plain TikZ.
