comment texfot hangs when used with tex4ht but does not hang with pdflatex
@michal.h21 the full mk4 I am using is from the link to your post. This is your file :) I just removed the part that I did not think was needed to make it small. But I just put the full main.mk4 in the question. the cfg is not needed so I kept it out to keep things simple.

comment texfot hangs when used with tex4ht but does not hang with pdflatex
@michal.h21 the mk4 file I show above is small version of the main one I have which is much larger. I did not think the full mk4 is needed. But I can put the main one I am using now. But it does not make any difference. It still hangs. Also the cfg is not really needed to show the problem. I tried to keep things simple, just to show the hang.

comment texfot hangs when used with tex4ht but does not hang with pdflatex
@cfr as I mentioned in my post, I tried many options. And yes, it hangs without --tee /dev/null . I do not know how to make a MWE since it hangs only when the file is large. i.e. has lots of math content. For small files, it does not hang. Please do not bother with this if the file size is too large for your system. I wish I could figure how to make a MWE.

comment why lualatex gives erorr “Too many open files” but pdflatex does not on same latex file?
@MartinSchröder I just did. But it did not work I am afraid. On Linux mint 7.2. I still get the same exact error as before.

comment Sum of finite series using LaTeX 3
But you can do the above and much much more and more easily as well, using a computer algebra system, then export the results to Latex at the end.

@PaulGaborit Linux mint 7.2 does not have this command: >unlimit descriptors unlimit: command not found but I thought file handlers limits is fixed in the system to something like 1024 if I remember and can't be changed by the program. But I could be wrong.

comment why is adding `breqn` package breaks `etoolbox` command?
thanks. Initial test shows it works but generates what seems to be harmless error from lualatex but no such message from pdflatex. When I compiled using lualatex -shell-esc foo.tex I see message: (/usr/local/texlive/2015/texmf-dist/tex/generic/oberdiek/ifluatex.sty))) (./foo2.aux)id: invalid option -- '.' Try 'id --help' for more information. but when I look at the pdf file, I see the group id there ! I need to test this more on my main file which does something more complicated. thanks

comment how to use output of bashful splice to assign it to a Latex counter?
@DavidCarlisle Ok, thanks. I am switching to egrep \shellcommand which works! but it has problem when I use breqn package, which I must use. I posted separate question on that. Latex is so hard.

@DavidCarlisle that was just an example. I am using the bash command to obtain different information. But using id -g for illustrations.
