comment How to type sheaf hom
Although, note, the H is in Hartshorne a mathscript letter, so one should use \mathscr{H} and one of the many fine mathscr packages

(Also, fwiw, it may be easier to use \begin{pmatrix}...\end{pmatrix} instead of \bigll(...\bigrr), since it will autosize it for you!)

I've seen \mbox{} used instead of \text{} for this job, could you explain the merits of \text{} over \mbox{}?

comment What's the proper way to typeset a differential operator?
Springer-Verlag's monograph style had \def\D{\mathrm{d}} for the differential operator. I agree with Hendrik Vogt's post below for spacing, that one should typically (but not always) write \,\D x. The exception: after a fraction, e.g., \frac{\sin(x)}{x}\D x is OK; and after a function, e.g., \cos(x)\D x is also OK. But I think there is no single golden rule...it's an art, not a science.

comment Permutation cycle notation
For math spacing, you could try \; which is not quite as much as a quad (and \, for finer spacing).

comment Proposition command doesnt work
And if you want the text to be upright, not italicized, you can always add \theoremstyle{definition}\newtheorem{rant}{Angry Rant}. More examples may be found in the AMSthm documentation.

In the TeXbook, Knuth suggests writing '\thinspace'', for '+''.

+1 for noting apostrophe (') is, in math mode, the same as ^{\prime}

comment Graphing sine function in MetaPost
+1 for answering the question, using metapost (not Tikz), and not using fancy LaTeX dialects (i.e., you avoided LuaLaTeX).

comment Correct way to typset esssup (essential supremum)
Note that \, and friends are math spacing whereas \thinspace and co. are text spacing, which is a critical distinction (it produces errors otherwise).

comment How should imaginary numbers be typeset?
Unrelated suggestion: define \def\I{i} and simply use \I everywhere in your math. You can fix your one macro later, after finishing your manuscript. After many similar problems, I found this helps me maintain productivity.

comment Is it Possible to Obtain Rudin-Style LaTeX Document Format?
@JTian: are you interested in the font? The proof environment? The subsection format? The equation numbering? The margin formatting? Specifically, what are you interested in? You appear to only talk about font, so is that what you're really asking about? (There's more to typography than just the font, you know!)

comment Change appearance of equation numbers locally
You could also write in the preamble \let\oldappendices\appendices then \def\appendices{\def\theequation{\Alph{chapter}.\arabic{equation}}\oldappendice‌s} which may be "too TeX" and "not enough LaTeX" of an answer...
