comment miktex-makepk: PK font Alegreya-Regular-lf-t1--base could not be created
Only worked when I executed updmap.exe as normal user, i.e., without --admin (for the xcharter package). Yay.

comment How to create magnified subfigures and corresponding boxes for portions of a large image
A nice way to use this for me would be to have main image on left in landscape (and in golden ratio), and a single zoom image in portrait (and in golden ratio) with same height beside it. How would I add a size or similar constraint to the zoombox?

comment RaggedRightParindent also indents caption titles with subcaption package
\captionbeside is an environment from the KOMA-Script classes. Allows floats to have their captions placed beside them :) It has some additional width and placement options (see page 115 for version 2012-07-22 of the docs).

Thanks, this is a tidy solution. I get some overlap of figure and caption text when using a \captionbeside environment though, any idea why? And where is \DeclareCaptionFormat from?

Odd, this works for the MWE, but didn't for my larger document. Something else is muddying the waters. I have put \AtBeginEnvironment{figure}{\setcapindent{0em}} as well, and that does it.

comment Changing the font size in a table
Dredging up the past... @Mico, I don't see this behaviour at all. None of my captions (specified with \caption) are affected in any way with a fontsize declaration before them inside a table environment.

comment Referencing to “above” or “below”?
@Marnix, conversely I suspect that one reason many prefer latex to word is precisely because they can write code like this to do just about anything, whereas in word it has to be a 'feature'.
