comment Intensity and contrast of black text
Are you by chance using Mac OS X Preview? There is a difference between black in the RGB color space and black in the CMYK color space. The latter is often represented as a dark grey.

comment How can I selectively paginate my Master's Thesis?
Also, checkout the memoir class. I used this for my thesis and was very happy with it. I prepared a basic layout that I used for my thesis. Feel free to use and modify it. github.com/tdett/thesis-template. Also, consider learning git or mercurial for version control.

Ah, of course. I'll edit my answer. If he uses a standard setup, which places wouldn't be searched by the shell?

He doesn't specify, so we don't know... "Command not found" sounds like a PATH problem to me.

Could you please add a preamble to the MWE? This makes it easier for us to help.

comment Efficiently maintaining a long-term Bibliography database
That's certainly not the answer people would like to hear, but I like EndNote a lot, because it also manages the PDF files belonging to the articles. You can export the whole database to BibTex. So far I didn't find a good BibTeX-only software that is able to manage PDFs. There is also Mendeley, which is able to keep a BibTex file in parallel at a specified directory.

comment What is the round v symbol used by my thermodynamics text for volume and specific volume?
The only option left is \vee, but that doesn't quite fit either. So I stay with \nu.

comment Align text on a vertical axis similar to movie credits
I do not see why... the [t] option solves it perfectly.

On a different note, do you know lilypond? (lilypond.org) This is a very sophisticated notation software.
