@cfr that yields /usr/local/share/texmf, so I guess it's located where it should.

@daleif Here: /usr/local/share/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/ua1/ua1.map, and it says the following ua1r8r A030-Reg " TeXBase1Encoding ReEncodeFont " <8r.enc <ua1r8a.pfb (newline) ua1b8r A030-Bol " TeXBase1Encoding ReEncodeFont " <8r.enc <ua1b8a.pfb (newline) ua1ri8r A030-Ita " TeXBase1Encoding ReEncodeFont " <8r.enc <ua1ri8a.pfb (newline) ua1bi8r A030-BolIta " TeXBase1Encoding ReEncodeFont " <8r.enc <ua1bi8a.pfb (newline)

@daleif thanks, it didn't work: ereased that, sudo mktexmlsr-ed and nothing. I'm reading now this short paper, I'll try with some other font (for sake of understanding font installation), and report soon what happens.

@daleif Indeed! Should I erease them? I've found in the file /.texmf-config/web2c/updmap.cfg among others, which for instance makes no reference to arial, but the line Map ua1.map (among others).

@daleif I did that now. Thanks, now one problem is solved: my fonts are no longer in home/mycarpet/ but in /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/ua1/uarial.sty. So I guess now are "installed", but compiling renders a similar error as above (i.e. mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for ua1r8r. mktexpk: perhaps ua1r8r is missing from the map file.) or no arial at all (just as if my line \usepackage{uarial} was ignored).

@daleif So it seems. Answering your questions: I installed the "getnonfreefonts" as here is stated That is, wget http://tug.org/fonts/getnonfreefonts/install-getnonfreefonts then luatex getnonfreefonts. Then just getfreefonts -a, so in principle I have also, say, gramond: it doesn't work either. I.e. when I run this file, provided by a font catalog it shows similar behaviour. However, when I ask sudo getnonfreefonts -l, I get that everything is installed(!). I cannot see why.

@daleif done, I added what the command line way of running my file says.

@daleif I used kile, I run with PDFLaTeX. After compiling it shows me in "logs and messages" the following: [PDFLaTeX] name_of_file.tex => name_of_file.pdf (pdflatex) // [PDFLaTeX] finished with exit code 1 // [PDFLaTeX] 0 errors, 0 warnings, 0 badboxes

Oh, I see. In on installing this time with getnonfreefonts-sty I only found an error regarding arial, i.e. "ERROR: The following map file(s) couldn't be found: arial.map (in /etc/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg) Did you run mktexlsr?"

Well, the error is [PDFLaTeX] finished with exit code 1, then says 0 errors, 0 warnings, 0 badboxes but it generates no PDF. I get the same with this answer here. tex.stackexchange.com/a/140103/15542

@cfr ok, I first got rid of all in the personal texmf carpet. I verified with getnonfreefonts -l unti I got that no font was installed. Then I ran getnonfreefonts -a (with sudo) but it's automatically creating a new texmf carpet with the fonts and all the stuff there. I don't know how to create that in usr/local/share/texmf/, where I guess it is supposed to be installed.
