I'm also studying Engineering of Computer Science at the Politecnico di Milano, after enjoying an Erasmus period by the Vrije Universiteit. I have also been a Software Engineer Intern at Google. I moderate Gaming, whine on Twitter and lurk on Youtube.

It should go without saying that the opinions stated by me are my own and not necessarily those of my companies past and future, but apparently it doesn't and while no one asked me to put this disclaimer here, I'll just put it over here with the rest of the fire.

Mah reps, let me show you them.

@TorbjørnT. Ooooh, good catch! You also have to set your bibliography section to use plainnat instead of plain.

I have changed this in my document and changed each citation style to (Surname, year). The LyX preview shows the citation style I want. However, the resulting PDF remains in the numeric [1] style. (LyX 2.1 on Windows)

I've talked with LyX developers about this and this is the approach they recommend.

For diagrams that are a little simpler than this, you can easily get away with using the simpler GraphViz. In the simplest cases its syntax is dead simple: digraph G { "a" -> "c" -> "d"; "b" -> "c" }. Save in test.dot and then run dot test.dot -Tsvg -o test.svg.

comment How can I introduce a non-technical person to LaTeX?
Probably, your secretary was starting from relatively blank or didn't use many of the Word features, whereas your IT guy had a lot of Word knowledge and habits he needed to transition from. Just because Windows power users find Linux (or Mac) hard to use at first, it doesn't mean a brand new user would.

@LianTzeLim Just be careful with not stepping over the newbie's toes. Unlike all versioning systems, Dropbox doesn't handle conflicts at all and either (not both!) of you might end up with "(conflicted copy)" versions of the same file.

+1,000. Most of the power of TeX with none of the syntax, plus the aggressive take on changing your mindset away from "I want this to be Arial 15pt bold italic centered" and back to "I want this to be a title" makes LyX awesome for this.
