comment Leontief-like matrix
@wipet The base assumption here is that the document is a LaTeX document unless explicitly stated otherwise.

comment Letter with circle above — not a dot — in math mode
I was not thinking of detexify, but of texdoc symbols given as the first option in the top answer - table 164 Math mode accents, the same table containg \dot. That not only answers your question, but tells you how to find answers to similar questions.

comment Nonstandard analysis: Typesetting `^*` depending on context
OK, but I would suggest you use \mkern minus whatever mu, instead of \!

comment how to use unsrt in thebibliography
To clarify, unsrt and the like only have an effect in combination with use of an external database and bibtex. If you write your reference list by hand in thebibliography then sorting is usually not available.

comment Question about example of alignment in TeXbook
The last column just takes up the remaining space available. If you put text after that last & in the sample then you would get the same resulting tab settings. So nothing needs to correcting; you may put text there if you wish but it will have no effect.

comment Break a large theorem using mdframed on beamer
Unfortuately mdframed splitting doesn't work in beamer. See tex.stackexchange.com/q/52386/15925, which suggests some alternatives.

Are prepared to break these by hand or do you want something automatic? Also are these inline expressions or is OK to make them displays?

comment How to obtain a heavier math font?
The standard solution would be to \usepackage{mathptmx} which sets \rmdefault to ptm and does some appropriate font substitutions in the math. However, newtxtext and newtxmath are regarded as more modern and complete versions of this.

comment elsarticle.cls and biblatex incompatibility
@yannis The capitalisation is that given in the journal - even in English authors can't agree whether such words should be capitalised or not. For biblatex use I don't want to write {C}hern because of kerning issues. When converting to bibtex I currently check these cases by hand.

You can just load the math fonts from these. Which engine are you using? How are you loading "Times"?

comment Problem with subfig, ref and renewcommand
Glad it helps. If you wish to change the style of the part numbering then you should do this consistently, redefining \thepart instead.
