Yes it was. "This also happens in the document itself, with each new section it lists the number to the left. I would like to clear those but still keep the subsection numbers."

That answer only gets rid of section numbering in the table of contents. I don't think the OP wants section numbering in the body, either...

I've also gone ahead and accepted this answer, at least for the time being. I would love to be able to get line numbers using the bidipoem package and a nice font in XeLaTeX, but I haven't seen any indication that that's possible.

I appreciate your concern for protocol, but I don't agree that this is just a part of my question. It's a different approach that solves one of the original issues, albeit partially. Anyway, I think this should be left where it is, even though the answer you've posted is quite a bit better.
