comment problem with ps2pdf command with metapost graphics
A final thought from Bruce Wagner, my colleague at College of the Redwoods. In this case, we should now be able to give the experts a go at determining which lines in one or both of these files are causing the problem.

comment problem with ps2pdf command with metapost graphics
A comment from Bruce Wagner: Did a little more file comparison, and now I think I've got the problem narrowed down to lines 136-144 in the 2014 version of file 'pgfutil-latex.def'. These lines were added after 2012, and appear to have something to do with shipping out graphics files. When I comment out these lines, then everything seems to work OK.

comment problem with ps2pdf command with metapost graphics
A comment from Bruce Wagner: I figured the problem must reside in the pgf package somewhere since tkz has not been updated in a while. So I started comparing and testing files in the pgf package between the 2012 and 2014 versions. After a lot of laborious trial and error, I believe that I've narrowed the problem down to two files that were updated in that package, namely 'pgfutil-common.tex' and/or 'pgfutil-latex.def'. When I take the 2012 versions of these files and put them in the current directory (or in texmf-local), then everything seems to work just fine.

Do you have suggestions of passing options that will make the second example work, even when the tis commands are not commented out?

I'm not using Ghostscript to view the images. I just double-clicked the pdf file and it opened in Acrobat Reader as a blank image when the two commands regarding tkz were uncommented. My system is a Macbook pro, brand new, using Mavericks and my tex system is Mactex.org, the new Texlive 2014 version that was just recently released.

Perfect. This really helped today as I continue on my project. Note that you have one extra |r, seven columns instead of the required six columns, but still awesome reply.

comment Overline in text mode, Background Color
We wrote a system at our college which creates randomly generated exercises online for our students. Teachers use them as homework, quizzes, preparation for exams, class activities, etc. The base file has a coding section for perl code, where we can generate random variables that are used in the main file. The code sheet is processed by perl and system scripts, then the result is compiled in Latex. Consequently, sometimes certain symbols are used in dual roles so sometimes something won't work, but not that often.
