comment scale default sans font
Thanks - loading times through mathptmx definitely looks better. My instructions were to use "11pt Times" for the body and "not change any fonts" - though Helvetica (loaded through the times package) seems to be what most people are using for algorithm names. We'll see if they accept (or even notice) CMSS too.

That works for me. Just out of curiosity, is it possible to set the \textsf font to be the same as the math one (with textmode spacing/dashes etc.)?

comment inconsolata bold on old ubuntu/precise/TexLive
I'm still missing something: for the document \documentclass{article} \usepackage{zi4} \begin{document} \texttt{some regular \textbf{and bold} text} \end{document} I get: ! Font OT1/zi4/m/n/10=ot1-zi4r-0 at 10.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file not found. I did mktexlsr and updmap and the files are in ~/texmf/tex/latex/inconsolata/, it finds the zi4.sty file, what am I still missing? (somehow my markdown's not working either)

comment Adding a 'bridge' or link between two rows in a table
texample.net/tikz/examples - the most complex and powerful drawing tool in the TeXer's toolbox. But complete overkill for the situation described here.

Oops, "off by one" - the fifth column is redundant and should probably be deleted.

Small comment on table design: have a look at the booktabs package, with the new rule commands it offers you could get that table to look a lot better. Since booktabs also allows you to draw rules that only span some of the columns, you could add an extra empty column to the start of your table and put the braces in there - either with \rowspan cells or with zero-sized boxes as explained below.

comment How to make LaTeX not “Look like Lab Notes”
It is a design question for sure but I think there's merits to treating it as a TeX question too so people can make TeX-specific suggestions like saalk referring to classic-thesis below.
