A computer science lecturer at University College London. I do stuff in logic, theorem proving, program analysis and verification. I'm a very enthusiastic TeX/LaTeX user, most days.

I also run a small site for LaTeX beginners in spanish: LaTeX Fácil.

Ok, this question is getting some pretty good answers, so I've edited it to make the difference from the previous question more clear and explicit.

Sounds good! This is pretty much what I already do. So is there any reason one should want to use \[ instead of equation*? Or is it better just to forget about \[ altogether?

So the answer to that question is that one should use equation and not any replacement? (none of the answers to that question have been up-voted yet)

I was trying to save on *'s on the question, and that's why I added a note, but yes I mean equation*. In any case, what about the issues raised here?

Well I don't know if that is precisely the reason, but it looks like a sensible one!

Amy, to try to isolate your problem, could you try to compile this code with xelatex from the command line and see if it works for you? This way you can find if the problem is with LyX or your compile engines.

This is actually a standard rule of thumb: If you want to define an environment newenv that wraps an oldenv, you should use \oldenv and \endoldenv in the definition of \newenvironment{newenv}{...}{...}. The \begin and \end commands do some preparation to start/end the environment, which are not needed more than once.

Thanks for the update! Hope you don't mind I cleaned up a bit your example for the older datetime so that it's less hackish. ;)
