Thank you for your answer. I considered using the minipage environment in my definition. I decided against it because it doesn't break across pages, whereas the qshade environment from memoir does.

@JohnKormylo: Your suggestion works wonders for removing the extra blank line... The extra space in the first paragraph is still there though...

comment Replacing a glyph in one font with a glyph from another
Ah! Thanks. I see now that I do not need to use the very long definition I used for my custom letters. Also, I did not know that cfr-lm was a replacement for lmodern. I thought it was built on top of it. As for ugliness, I guess I don't see how the second versions of your words look too bad. The third version looks horrendous, I agree, which is why I only wanted to replace the "a" and the "g".

@cfr I load lmodern because the documentation for cfr-lm tells me that it needs all the machinery that lmodern provides. Why do I try to define the characters as I do? Because I am trying to replace only "a", "á", and "g" with their equivalents in upright italic latin modern rather than all characters.

Thank you cfr for your very informative response. It is not well advertised that Gentium offers upright single story "a", but it does. To see this one would have to take a look at the pdf file at the following link detailing the font features: scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/…. This doesn't tell me how to access these features in LaTeX, however.

@cfr Does Gentium really provide a "roman" (or "upright") single-story "a"? If so, how do I get access to it from LaTeX? Besides adding \usepackage{gentium} to my header, that is.

comment What is the difference beween all the paths from tex to pdf file? Which one is better?
@cfr, MaxNoe, PTNobel: well, I was under the miss-conception that everything in MiKTeX was somehow handled by the XeLaTeX in some kind of compatibility mode. I apologize for being wrong about that. I have deleted the part of the question having to do with XeTeX. The first part of the question is still valid, though.

@cfr, PTNobel: I have modified my question to make it more precise. MikTeX uses the XeTeX engine, not XeLaTeX. And I have tried to make the question less opinion oriented.

comment What is MiKTeX Cairo? How about MikTeX Graphite2?
Thank you cfr! That is exactly what I was looking for. Maybe you want to upgrade your comment to an answer, so I ca credit you with it?
