It may be worth nothing that dcolumn is included in the memoir package.

comment How can one put a “[” after \item?
An alternative would be to create an \Item command that does not have optional arguments, and use that.

... so the problem seems to not be between TexLive versions, and would therefore seem to be with the way TexLive is compiled & packaged versus how it is done for Debian (with Debian being significantly faster).

Interesting. Are they TexLive native packages, or is one of them from SuSE packages?

@JanHlavacek You're probably right; I'll compare the files being loaded and post that.

@LimitedAtonement: Maybe give the Memoir class a shot - it solved the problem for me: ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/memoir

... I guess what I need is the height of multicol with the column sizing of tabularx. :)

Thanks for the answer – this is excellent, and pretty close to the sort of solution I've been thinking of. pdflscape is great; for some reason I wasn't using it, but I can't remember why now. :o) The one constraint I have (that I didn't note in the question - sorry; that's why I was using {tabularx}{...}{Xc}) is that the width of the X block should be "max(.5\linewidth, \linewidth - D)" eg X should be 70% of the width when the width of D is 30%. I'm tinkering now to see if I can figure that out.

@Werner: It is part of a larger, portrait-oriented document with content preceding it (but likely not following it).
