I am a student interested in programming languages, functional programming, program synthesis, type theory, universal algebra and startups (not necessarily in that order!). In the near future, I want to combine as many of these as possible.

I am currently an undergraduate researcher at the Berkeley ParLab, working on program synthesis. This past summer, I was a tech intern at Jane Street Capital, brazenly using OCaml in the real world. Right now, I'm leading a meetup group about type theory; you can see the slides here or just show up to the next on if you live near SF ;).

I am always happy to chat: my email is tikhon@jelv.is

comment Embeddable in browser LaTeX editor/compiler plugin?
If you're only looking for math, MathJax is the best (and most common, I think) option. Other se sites like physics and math use it, I believe.

Math mode just means that the part of the document you're working on is an equation. $abc$ means the abc is in math mode. You can also use \(\); things like \[\] and the various math environments (equation, align...etc) also put their contents into math mode but also have other effects.

As I said, you need to be in math mode. Try using $\rightarrow$ or \(\rightarrow\) when you want an arrow.

comment \leftarrow does not work
It sounds like you might be having issues with math mode. Are you trying to put the arrows inside some sort of box?

How exactly don't they work? Do you get an error or do they just not show up?

Also note that, in a pinch, Emacs can view your .dvi or .pdf outputs in a buffer. You might need to use some version of Emacs in a window (e.g. not in a terminal).

comment Which font(s) provide for good readability while being economic?
Lovely font, and I personally have not had any problems typesetting all sorts of math with it (that said, I haven't used \partial yet, so there may well be issues).
