comment Theorem name and number in margin, note in text
In thmtools 58 and higher, the pertinent space is replaced with \thmt@space with a \providecommand defaulting it to a space, so it will be configurable in a less hackish way. (No concrete release date on that yet, though.)

Good point, I've opened a ticket for that. Let's see if it does me any good. ;)

comment Nice formatting for theorems
@Mikael: for completeness' sake: \declaretheorem[% preheadhook={\begin{mdframed}[leftline=true,rightline=false,% topline=false,bottomline=false]},% postfoothook=\end{mdframed}% ]{theorem} (with linbreaks after each %.)

@Mikael: you're not supposed to tap into theoremdefiner. Without having given a deeper look, giving preheadhook and postfoothook keys should be sufficient, similar to the way it's done for the shaded key.

@Jonathan: good point. Still solvable by throwing enough resources at it. Will update example once I've had enough coffee. (Inhowfar would enumitem and cleveref not combine? cleveref hooks into a lower level than enumitem, you just have to tell it what the name for the counters is.)

comment Robust method to apply Hebrew numeral in an enumeration list?
Would not something like \makeatletter \def\hebnum#1{\expandafter\hebrewnumeral\csname c@#1\endcsname} \AddEnumerateCounter{\hebnum}{\hebrewnumeral}{XXX} \makeatother work? Lifted from the enumitem docs sec.2.3, I don't know enough about the xetex mechanisms to try with proper hebrew stuff.

comment LaTeX Markup Options?
@angerman: Of course, if we were to write a new typesetting system from scratch today, we might end up making different choices. Something like "as of Jan 1st, 2012, backslash becomes entirely optional" is not feasible in the given TeX ecosystem.

I think we should also bear in mind the time at which TeX was designed. A possibly small drawback like the escape character `` can make a big difference in the speed and techniques with which the source can be parsed.
