@egreg Why not use the minimal class? I find it quite handy, especially for TikZ pictures.

comment Drawing a 3D cylinder, and a circle shape on the x---y plane
Without having tried, I guess replacing the \filldraw[fill=white] command with \draw instead should do the trick.

comment Change positioning of *all* figures
@Majoko Could you please edit the requirement to override also positioning commands explicitly given with single floats into your question? This would make it easier for future readers of their question to figure out if it possibly provides a solution for their problem.

comment When to use $something$ syntax?
@cfr I'm of course aware of the fact that \emph is not equal to \textit but as the OP already linked a question where the difference is explained and says himself that he understands the difference. Hence I didn't for that part of the story.

comment Biblatex abbrevation for no author/editor/year/etc. in alphabetic style
Could you please add some minimal working example (MWE) which contains also bibentries with the required properties (i.e. a proceeding without editor, an article without author and so on)? This would ease playing a round with the problem a lot.

sound like a case for the \AtEveryBibitem directive... Just don't know how exactly right now.
